Joy Adler And The Souls of Evolution

Friday October 28: Joy Adler And The Souls of Evolution

Winner 2008 Toronto Online Magazine Awards for:
“Best International Pop CD/Album”
& “Best International Female Artist.”
Rare, stunning, transcending; Joy Adler is an extraordinary vocalist who sings from the depths of her being and risks revealing it to the world to create one-of-a-kind concert experiences.
Although Joy first began singing music in church as a child, because of the power and range of her voice, she began her career as a rock singer. She specialized in bringing her own interpretation to songs by Led Zeppelin, Journey, The Cult, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Heart, Bad Company, Thin Lizzy and the like.
Later she perfected her stage performing and stretched herself vocally by singing R&B as well as lighter musical influences like pop and jazz on the stages of Atlantic City. Joy appreciated the experience she gained from performing at this level, but longed to get back to her passion, songwriting and original music.
A recent 4-star review of her 2008 release “Postcards” sums up her multi-genre style: “The opening slice, “By Your Side,” is propelled by guitars that suggest the influence of country music or Americana. It is rootsy pop with a solid vocal performance that is sweet but not as sugary as you’d hear from today’s Nashville populace. “Prayer” turns the page immediately after it, letting Mike Steiner’s fiery blues riffs loose while Adler’s voice soars through the clouds. “Our Rapture,” on the other hand, is a delicate piano piece reminiscent of Tori Amos (minus the personal issues) and Norah Jones.

Friday October 7:  Todd Nelson Trio TN3 mixes elements of jazz, rock and electronics, playing original songs and new arrangements of unusual covers, including pop, folk and gospel and any other genre signified by the muse.
The music of TN3 is improvisational but not noise; exploratory in texture and sound but melodic; arranged but open-ended; structured while embracing the random; aware of the past without repeating it; unafraid of space, subtlety or beauty, and it rocks.

Gideon Freudmann: blues/ jazz/ folk fusion performer-composer Friday, August 19

Gideon Freudmann, a cello innovator, has created his own style of music called CelloBop - a fusion of blues, jazz, folk and much more. Carmen’s Café of Troy, NY is proud to host nationally known blues/ jazz/ folk fusion performer and composer, Gideon Freudmann on Friday, August 19.

Gideon Freudmann, a cello innovator, has created his own style of music called CelloBop – a fusion of blues, jazz, folk and much more. Not only has Gideon performed at The Montreal International Jazz Festival, The Prague Swing Jazz Festival and throughout the US, but his music is also frequently heard on NPR’s All Things Considered. His creative workshops at schools, colleges and music camps, as well as his tunebook, New Music For Cello has inspired cello and violin students and teachers from coast to coast to perform his music by their own cello choirs and string ensembles. Gideon’s original composed music has been commissioned for film, theatre and dance. His recent project has been performing live soundtracks for classic silent films. Gideon has 12 original CDs to his credit and has performed on dozens of albums by other musicians.

Gideon now lives in Oregon, but got his start playing the New York/ Massachussets/ Connecticut area.  He has played for several NPR shows, been featured on Weekend Edition, and performed at The Egg in Albany in collaboration with the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company.  He is about to tour the area, also playing at The Iron Horse in Northampton, MA.

A classical musician by training, Freudmann earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Cello Performance from the University of Connecticut. Since that time, Freudmann has distinguished himself as one of New England’s finest solo cross-genre cellists, performing in literally hundreds of venues throughout the United States, including a featured performance at the New Directions Cello Festival in New York. His solo CDs featuring exclusively original songs and lyrics have received international distribution, extensive national and international airplay and glowing critical reviews.

Freudmann has held several artistic residencies including the University of Connecticut, James Madison University, Ithaca Violoncello Institute and others, and has performed in dozens of colleges and universities in the country. Freudmann has been featured as a guest musician on an eclectic array of folk and rock CDs, and his innovative sounds have been commissioned for video, film and dance soundtracks. Among his non-classical influences, Freudmann cites the Kronos Quartet, Turtle Island String Quartet, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, guitarist Leo Kottke, and the many jazz and blues greats of this century.
